Joomla Boom in Sri Lanka

The ICT Agency of Sri Lanka together with University Moratuwa conducted a two day training programme on “Web designing using CMS (Joomla)” last 26th and 27th of August 2008. The training programme was held at Distance Learning Centre Ltd, Colombo, Sri Lanaka and there ware forty five participants participated from all over the country representing Nenasala (Srilankan Telecentre).


ICT agency of Srilanka has conducted a several training programme to Nenasala (tecentre) operators in order to provide a batter services to community. As an outcome of several training request from Nenasala operators, this programme has been design to give them a basic technical knowledge and in-depth content management knowledge. During this training programme participant were provided localized (Singhala) joomla guide book and finalized versions of joomla Sinhala and Tamil language extensions. Due to high demand for 26th and 27th training programme ICTA was not able to accommodate all applicants. In order to build the Nenasala operators capacity, sharpen their technical knowledge on joomla, ICTA is going to conduct the second training programme coming 4th and 5th of September 2008.


ICT Agency of Sri Lanka is the government body responsible for implementing the e Srilanka Development Initiative. It is the single apex body involved in ICT policy, direction and development for the nation. The Agency is involved in five key programmes 1.Re-engineering Government, 2.Information Infrastructure, 3.ICT investment & Private Sector Development, 4.e-Society, 5.ICT Human policy leadership and institutional development.


Under the Information Infrastructure Programme, the Nenasala Project seeks to empower rural communities across Sri Lanka with affordable access to ICT based services A majority of the Nenasalas follow a community model and is established in a central place in the village such as a religious institution, public library or a community centre. These centres provide a range of services including high-speed internet access, local and international information; e mail; telephone; computer training and other ICT related facilities. Content essential to the rural community is available in Sinhala and Tamil language. The Nenasala acts as a resources centre disseminating and sharing knowledge through ICT.
